I was a young magistrate – stepped down after 10 years as it became clear I was…misaligned…to the culture. At which point they suddenly could find no record of my first year training completion (which was mandatory, and without which I couldn’t have continued serving after my first year) and refused to add me to the reserve list, booting me out completely. It is a very insular and self-selected group with an extraordinary degree of associated politics in the Magistrates Association.

This is a sad but perfect example of the dangers of retaining hobby non- qualified Magistrates . They are expensive in the long run as they are slow and need to be advised all the time by a legal advisor . They no longer represent the community they originally were designed to look after because of all the Court closures from the mid-90s onwards . They are an anachronism . We need more DJs and Deputy DJs to cut the court backlog to achieve faster and consistent justice for those accused of crime and those witnessing and being a victim of it . Simply suggesting that Lay Magistrates (however well intentioned ) save us money because “they do it for free and only claim expenses” misses the point of their overall cost in the long term to the Criminal Justice System.
