Magistrates and judges tend to believe the police by default. Where it’s purely a matter of their word against yours, and they’re lying, you won’t have a chance. We have also seen how magistrates and judges blindly follow the political lead set by politicians, passing ridiculous sentences during times of crisis. Juries, while also unpredictable and capricious, remain the last bulwark against the establishment.
