2,753 students sat latest assessment

The pass rate for the latest sitting of part two of the Solicitors Qualifying Examination (SQE2) has reached a record high of 82%, according to new figures released by the Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA).

The April–May 2025 sitting saw 2,753 candidates sit the assessment, with first-time sitters — making up the bulk of the cohort at 2,577 candidates — achieving an even higher pass rate of 84%.

This surpasses the previous high of 81%, recorded earlier this year.

SQE2 comprises 16 stations in total, including 12 written assessments and four oral assessments, testing practical skills and the application of legal knowledge. You can read the SRA’s latest statistical report in full here.

News of the pass rates comes as a petition calling for an overhaul of the SQE surpassed 1,500 signatures. The anonymous trainee behind the petition argues that the exams are “not fit for purpose” and discriminate against candidates from diverse backgrounds and those with different learning styles. They also shared how preparing for the SQE has taken a serious toll on their mental, financial and physical wellbeing.

It would be interesting to see data comparing pass rates among: (i) sponsored candidates studying FT; (ii) sponsored candidates studying PT; (iii) self-funding candidates studying FT; and (iv) self-funding candidates studying PT.

This must be in response to the recent criticisms. The whole thing still needs to be abolished.

Weren’t they meant to release all the extra info this time too? Regarding sponsored pass rate, full time work pass rate etc?

Completely fit for purpose, Suella Braverman proved correct.

I can absolutely guarantee that these providers are running some form of direct, indirect or other kind of discriminatory filters, firstly designed to artificially beat money out of the candidates and secondly to screen who qualifies, on behalf of the regulator (likely based on multiple protected characteristic). I really feel sorry for these SQE candidates.

SQE2 comes after SQE1, which has a low pass rate. People who pass that first exam are of course more likely to pass the second exam.

Why is the pass rate fluctuating so much? Have candidates improved by a whopping 21% since last year? This actually just shows the SRA have no clue what they’re assessing nor how to do it properly.

Think you need to check this “fact”; the pass rate for SQE 2 has not fluctuated by 21% since 2024.

More whining about the ‘disparate impact’ on ‘disadvantaged candidates’. It’s an examination. Not everyone will pass. The expectation seems to be that you should pass if you’ve paid your money.

This caucus race approach sets junior lawyers up for disappointment in practice. You don’t get promoted just by showing up like you’re owed it.
